Rock Creek Park: The Forest in the Middle of Everything

Rock Creek Park: The Forest in the Middle of Everything

1,754 acres running through Northwest D.C. Established 1890. The Valley Trail follows the creek south from the Nature Center toward the National Zoo — shaded, flat, accompanied by the creek's steady commentary. Deer browse the hillsides with the entitled posture of animals who know they live in a national park.

The Boulder Bridge from 1902 arches over the creek in local stone with the Romanesque dignity of infrastructure that took its mandate seriously. The creek pools beneath it, trees frame it, and the whole thing looks designed by someone who understood that public works can be beautiful if you use the same stone as the landscape.

April for dogwoods and full creek. Fall color comes late to D.C. but the tulip poplars and oaks compete with New England. Free, dawn to dusk, accessible from dozens of points. Weekends, Beach Drive closes to cars.
